Quick Update

Hey, everyone!

Just wanted to let you know where I'm at in the process. I got Vol. 2 off to my proofers last week and I'm closing in the final draft of Vol. 1 and should have that off to them this week. Here's a behind the scene look at what my life looks like right now...

Laying the pages out in Adobe InDesign...
Author's notes from PS Part Four, plus a previously unpublished short story!
Revamping the original "Process" tutorial from PS Part One...

Still need to finish up the PS Art Book, though. The basic layouts are complete, but I need to go back and add in the artist's notes. I also want to paint a new cover for it, instead of just re-using old artwork. The new cover will also double as the poster print for those of you who ordered one.

I started playing around with thumbnails for that design this week, too. Here's a sneak peek:

I'm leaning towards the one in the lower right. I could use the column from the El tracks as the spine!

With the holidays quickly zooming towards us, I'm not going to have the files off the printer before Christmas hits, but they should be ready to after New Year's in early January. I built about a month of wiggle room into my production plan, so even with 6-8 weeks of turnaround at the printer, that should still mean I'll get books in hand late February or early March so fulfillment can begin.

One other thing, I'm looking into setting up pre-orders, so if your decide you want to upgrade your order, or have friends who missed out on the campaign, there will be a way to get extra books!

Thanks again for your support--

We did it!
about 5 years ago – Thu, Dec 05, 2019 at 05:17:45 PM

I'm absolutely delighted to announce the PS Kickstarter has wrapped up strong. The campaign raised an incredible $18,543. I would have never believed it before I launched the campaign 4 weeks ago. This wouldn't have been possible without every single one of you! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Kate thanks you, too. =)

Next I'll be putting the finishing touches on the books so I can send them off to the proofreaders. And, I'm going to be painting the cover to the new PS art book—which will also be the source for the new poster.

A few of your have expressed disappointment that this campaign didn't reach the big "shoot the moon" stretch goal of $25K and have assumed this means the end of the road for PS. I am here to tell you that is not the case. Your tremendous support has proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that there is a demand to see more of Kate & Mike's story, and I'd like to tell it. Once I get these books off to the printer and the holidays are over, I can start thinking about a script for the new storyline. I can't tell you right now when you can expect to see it, but there will definitely be a PS Volume 3.

On a more personal note, the journey that I went on to complete PS Part Four: Flight was a long one. Many of you saw me step away from this project in 2013, and at the time no one, not even me, knew if it would ever see completion. I needed time to heal both my body and my psyche. Eventually I was able to do both, and when I returned to working on this story in 2016, I was sure that I'd Iost everything I'd built and that I would have to start over from scratch. The internet had become an intimidating place to me at that point, and I was pretty quiet when I re-started PS4 on my website in late 2017. By then most of the artwork was complete, and knew I would be able to see it through to the end. I finished it for myself, and for anyone else who had once enjoyed this story. However, I wasn't sure anyone was left who would notice or care. Thankfully, I was wrong.

Even when it was complete in 2018, I wasn't entirely sure there would be a large enough of audience to justify a traditional print run. But thanks to the support I had from my readers, my loved ones, and my friends, I decided to try anyway.

When I launched this Kickstarter, I had hoped I would get what I needed in order to publish these books. What I didn’t count on was that a deep wound would be healed by this outpouring of goodwill.

Your support here has changed my life.

Thank you for believing in me and my work.

Bonus Rewards added!
about 5 years ago – Fri, Nov 22, 2019 at 04:17:03 PM

Hey, everybody!

I've decided to add a couple of last-minute bonus rewards to the mix for the final days of the campaign.

Firstly, I've added a $20 a la carte option for the new Art of Paradigm Shift stretch goal book for anyone who's interested getting just that collection but not the graphic novels. It will include ebook editions of all the books, a bonus stretch goal ink sketch, and free domestic shipping ($12 shipping outside the US).

PS Vol. 2 (Part Four: Flight) Page 01 Cel Painting

However, for anyone who's interested, I'm offering up one more exclusive cel painting. I painted this as a test last spring as I was contemplating the color pages for these new collections. It's created in two layers.

The background was inked on watercolor paper and painted in gouache, while Kate was inked on a transparent Dura-lar overlay and then painted in acrylic on the backside to simulate the look of old animation production artwork.

The whole painting is 13"x19". It's currently unframed, but I will matte and frame it for the lucky person who wants to back the campaign at the $500 level.

I had considered creating a companion piece of the opening page of PS Vol. 1, but never got around to it. Let me know if that's something you'd be interested in, and I'd be willing change my mind about that...

Enjoy!

Wow! 300%!

Thanks to your generous support, the campaign has topped $15k, and it's still going! I'm tremendously grateful for your generosity, and I'm looking forward to getting these books finished up and sent to the printer in the next few weeks.

There's just under a week left in the campaign. Please tell your friends about it and maybe we can get close to reaching the final $25,000 stretch goal. I would love to be able to dedicate 2020 to starting PS Vol. 3!

Halfway there!
about 5 years ago – Thu, Nov 14, 2019 at 02:10:20 PM

I can't believe this campaign is only half over now. Thanks to everyone who's backed the campaign so far, we blew through the $10K barrier last week and are already closing in on $14K! I continue to be blown away by your support. And there's still just under 2 weeks to go!

I'm now deep into getting the books ready for the printer. I'm spending a lot of time using InDesign to edit and revise the footnotes and other back matter in volumes 1 & 2 right now.

Updating the footnotes

I've also gotten started on the bonus ink sketches. I've been doing them as warm-up sketches or drawing one as a fun break sometimes during the day.

Kate's got her eye on you... =)

Thanks again for all your support!
